Bay and Target Information
RANGE INFORMATION
With such a successful Range Cleanup Day last week, I believe its imperative to send out an email to the membership detailing all our range has to offer. Specifically what items on the range are targets vs. non-targets, what can be shot vs. what cannot, as well as weapon restriction items on the range.
Why is this important?
These concepts are important to make sure our target backers (paper target holders), steel, props, walls, buildings, etc., are maintained. If we take care of our range, it’ll last longer, hence why this is important and impacts all of us.
CLUB LAYOUT
The club is actually laid out to separate rifle & shotgun from handgun/rimfire. The rifle/shotgun area is to the far South of the property, whereas the individual handgun/rimfire bays (1 through 7) are to the North. Below is a picture diagraming the range layout. This layout is important for both safety as well as target backers and steel that’s in each type of bay.
PISTOL/RIMFIRE BAYS
Paper Target Backers
Because of the Range Cleanup crew, we now have 5 paper target backers in 5 separate pistol bays (see picture below of a new target backer).
Information on the target backers to make them last: •Staple paper targets in the center of OSB and not on 2x4s. Once 2x4s are shot up, the entire backer will collapse
•DO NOT SHOOT the 8 inch posts that are in the ground. I’m sure you can figure out why. But just in case, if you do shoot them down, the entire target backer will collapse, and this is not easily replaceable.
•Do your best not to shoot the 2x4s
Steel Pistol Plate Racks
There are a total of 3 steel pistol plate racks throughout the pistol bays. Some info on these steel plate racks: •These plate racks are for rimfire and centerfire pistol (non-magnum) only.
•DO NOT SHOOT with RIFLES, SLUGs, or MAGNUM pistols.
•NO armor piercing, steel core, or penetrator ammo. (These are soft steel, made for non-magnum pistol rounds.)
•It costs several hundred dollars to buy new plates, so please be cognizant of what you are using, and only use firearms and ammunition that will not damage the plates.
This is a pic of one of the new target backers in the pistol bays. This is an example of what a target backer looks like. There are five of these in the pistol bays and seven of these in the rifle bays. As you can see, they are permanently anchored in the ground.

RIFLE/SHOTGUN BAYS
Paper Target Backers
Because of the Range Cleanup crew, we now have a total of 7 paper target backers spread throughout the rifle field.
•When using a shotgun with shot, use common sense when shooting wood target backers. If you shoot a target backer multiple times with a shotgun, it’ll obviously quickly erode, and the OSB will fall down. If you want these target backers to last for others, please limit blasting target backers with shotgun shot.
Steel Swingers, Steel plates throughout rifle field
There are now a total of 6 steel swinger racks throughout the rifle field. Some info on these steel plate racks: •Please engage steel at a minimum distance of 100 yds.
•Please only engage steel with big magnums from at least 200 yds.
WHAT IS NOT A TARGET?
Throughout the range, there are tons of props, walls, displays, doors, barriers, etc., for competition use only. THESE ITEMS ARE NOT TARGETS, PLEASE DO NOT SHOOT THEM. Please do not hang targets from them, then shoot them; please do not damage them in any way, as these items are for competition shooting events.
Furthermore the majority of these props have been purchased by club members with personal money, so please treat these items with respect, and please do not shoot them.
WHAT IS A TARGET?
At Last Chance Handgunners, the ONLY items on property that can be shot are the target backers (pictured above) and steel already discussed in this newsletter. Anything that is not a target backer (5 in the pistol bay area, 7 in the rifle bay area) or a steel target IS NOT A TARGET.
Below are some pics of items on the range that are NOT targets. You will see, some of these items have recently been used as targets in the last few weeks.
We ask you to please police yourselves and others. If you see someone shooting a non-target item (not a target backer or steel) please tell them the item is not a target. We are all in this together, so lets work together to make our range great.
WRAP-UP
At the end of the day, this club belongs to all of us. Lots of people put a lot of effort into maintaining this club, so we ask as a collective group, for all of us to take care of the range equally.
Please do not shoot anything that is not a target backer or a piece of steel (with appropriate caliber, etc.) Please do not shoot any props, barriers, walls, doors, etc.; they are not target holders or stands.
The club has purchased and installed enough target backers and steel for everyone to have fun, even if they didn’t bring targets, so please do not shoot NON-TARGET items.
We ask you to self police and if you notice anyone shooting a “non-target,” to please point out a more appropriate target. The club spent over $1,000 on range clean up this year to bring you these target backers and steel targets, so lets get the most usage out of them as possible.
If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via email at lastchancehandgunners@gmail.com or to contact a Board member directly. Here is a link to all of the board members and their contact info: https://lastchancehandgunners.com/contacts/
These are barriers, NOT TARGETS.
